01. Why Medical Information Is One of the Most Critical Functions in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Every medicine continues to generate questions long after it receives regulatory approval. Some relate to safety, others to efficacy, dosing, drug interactions, special populations, or newly published evidence. On the surface, answering these questions may appear straightforward. In reality, every response carries scientific, clinical, and regulatory implications. The responsibility of ensuring that these responses are accurate, balanced, and supported by evidence belongs to Medical Information.

Medical Information is often described as the function responsible for answering medical enquiries. While that description is technically correct, it fails to capture what the profession actually involves. The response itself is only the visible outcome of a much larger scientific process. Before a response reaches a healthcare professional or patient, the available evidence has already been identified, critically evaluated, interpreted within the clinical context, reviewed for scientific accuracy, and translated into clear, objective communication. One of the easiest ways to underestimate Medical Information is to judge it by the response rather than by the thinking that produced it.

Scientific Judgement Is the Real Expertise

A common misconception is that Medical Information is primarily about searching the literature. Literature retrieval is important, but it is rarely the part that requires the greatest expertise. The real challenge begins after the papers have been found. Studies differ in design, patient populations, endpoints, statistical methods, and clinical relevance. The role of Medical Information is not to present every available publication, but to determine what the collective evidence can reasonably support.

Experience quickly teaches another important lesson. The most difficult medical enquiries are rarely those with the largest volume of evidence. They are often the ones where published data are limited, conflicting, or only partially applicable to the situation being considered. In these circumstances, scientific judgement becomes more valuable than scientific knowledge alone. Knowing when the evidence is insufficient to support a definitive conclusion is just as important as recognising when it is.

Presenting uncertainty is sometimes misunderstood as an incomplete answer. In Medical Information, it is often the most scientifically responsible answer available. The profession is built on communicating evidence honestly, not on providing certainty where none exists. That distinction is easy to appreciate after working in Medical Information for a few years, but it is rarely understood from the outside.

More Than a Support Function

Medical Information is still viewed by many organisations as an operational support function. That perception overlooks the breadth of its contribution. Medical Information supports healthcare professionals and patients directly, while also working closely with Medical Affairs, Pharmacovigilance, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Quality, and Commercial teams to help ensure that scientific information remains accurate and consistent throughout the lifecycle of a medicine. Few functions interact with such a wide range of scientific stakeholders while remaining accountable for the integrity of every communication.

The profession is also unusual because much of its best work is invisible. When Medical Information functions well, healthcare professionals receive reliable scientific information, patients gain a better understanding of their medicines, and internal teams communicate consistently. These outcomes rarely attract attention because they are expected. Problems become visible only when inaccurate interpretation, inconsistent messaging, or poor scientific communication undermine confidence. In many ways, Medical Information is defined as much by the problems it prevents as by the questions it answers.

A Profession That Will Only Become More Important

Scientific innovation is making medicines more complex, not less. Precision medicine, biologics, cell and gene therapies, and expanding sources of real-world evidence are changing the questions healthcare professionals ask and raising expectations for the quality of scientific communication. At the same time, artificial intelligence is making it easier to retrieve and summarise information. These developments will undoubtedly improve efficiency, but they do not replace scientific judgement. Technology can organise evidence remarkably well. It cannot decide whether the evidence is sufficiently robust, recognise where important limitations exist, or determine how uncertainty should be communicated responsibly.

Medical Information matters because it helps patients every single day. Every carefully developed response has the potential to influence a clinical decision, improve understanding of a medicine, or prevent the inappropriate interpretation of scientific evidence. Although the impact of a single response may seem small, its effect is multiplied across thousands of interactions throughout the lifetime of a product. As pharmaceutical science continues to evolve, organisations will need more than professionals who can retrieve information. They will need professionals who can evaluate evidence critically, communicate it responsibly, and exercise sound scientific judgement. That has always been the foundation of Medical Information, and it is the reason the profession deserves recognition as a scientific discipline in its own right.
